It is time to celebrate this unofficial holiday, which comes around once a year on August 9. Although we do not know how it started, we are grateful for this special day to celebrate books and the fascinating stories they share. From the first books known as scrolls, tablets, engravings, developed paper books bound with wooden covers dressed in leather to the now print-on-demand and digital books. We live in a spectacular world of innovation. The book is one of the best inventions ever created. Books share information, help us learn new things, enhance our life experiences, challenge our perceptions and ways of thinking, and inspire our creativity and imagination.

How will you celebrate this wonderful national holiday?

Let us count the ways… Smiles. Here are ten suggestions.

1. Schedule some time to spend with your children choosing a book you can read in a distraction-free, relaxing place. This suggestion reminds me of when my son was a toddler. We had ‘library day’ every Sunday. We would go to the library to pick out books, then have a picnic at our favorite park, snacking and reading under the shade of a large tree for hours. I miss those days.

2. Find a new book at a bookstore or online for yourself or to give to someone else.

3. Enjoy a book fair or market book stand. And/or shop at a garage sale for books you haven’t read before or find one for your collection.

4. Make or share a video of someone reading a book for your children.

5. Donate your old or new books to schools, youth centers, and libraries.

6. Join or start a book club.

7. Try a new genre.

8. Make time to read more often than you do now. Schedule it.

9. Volunteer to read to others at senior homes and hospitals.

10. Spread the news on social media using #NationalBookLoversDay.

No matter what you decide to do, enjoy the day!
